5 Free Apps to Learn French
Francization classes are essential, but your learning shouldn't stop at the end of the day.
1. Mauril (Radio-Canada) — For Quebec French
The app to download first. Developed by Radio-Canada, Mauril uses real Canadian content (news reports, interviews, sketches) to teach French as it's spoken in Quebec. Authentic content, all levels, completely free. Available on iOS, Android and web (mauril.ca).
2. Duolingo — For Consistency
Short exercises (5-15 minutes), daily streaks, motivating point system. Well-structured path from beginner to intermediate. Limitation: standardized French (France), not specifically Quebec French. Use Duolingo for grammar and Mauril for Quebec French.
3. TV5 Monde "Apprendre le français" — For Comprehension
Hundreds of exercises organized by level (A1 to B2), based on real television news reports. Rich content, constantly updated. Available at apprendre.tv5monde.com.
4. Busuu — For Writing Practice
Your written exercises are corrected by native French speakers, and you can help someone learning your language in return. Personalized study plans, generous free version.
5. Podcasts — For Passive Listening
Listen on the metro, while walking, while cooking. Recommendations: Français Authentique (classic), innerFrench (intermediate), Balado CARI (newcomer testimonials), C'est la vie — Radio-Canada (Quebec culture).
The Winning Combination
Mauril or Duolingo for 10 minutes every morning. A podcast during commutes. A TV5 Monde exercise in the evening. And most importantly, speak French as much as possible in your daily life.
